Our Story

It was August 2015 and Ann had just finished a 24-hour overnight shift at UPMC, Pittsburgh's hospital system where she was a second-year ophtho resident, when she replied to Chris regarding a first date: why not go for a run through downtown Pittsburgh?

This seemed like a perfectly reasonable idea to Chris, no stranger himself to unconventionalities while living his best grad student life. Leaving straight from CMU after throwing on his usual gym clothes, he met Ann on the edge of downtown and we exchanged our life stories while dodging pedestrians and navigating toward Market Square. Conceding to tradition, we then sat down at Noodles & Company for a proper dinner, before agreeing to do it again. Later that night we exchanged more messages and YouTube links for favorite symphony performances and both of us started to get a sense we were on the same wavelength.

Life since then has been a blur of adventure: we established early on that we both love hiking, and have made a point to get outdoors in every place we've lived. We had both moved around the country and left a trail of friends in various cities, and pretty quickly we were traveling together both to see them and to explore new places together: New York, Boston, Philly, Washington DC, Colorado, Montreal, the Scottish Highlands... We started cooking together early on, and discovered that (somehow!) most of the cooking should be left to Chris, not Ann; he was happy to fill the role as Ann came home late and exhausted. Ann quickly surrounded Chris with her ophthalmology friends at every chance, ensuring he eventually learned the parts of the eyeball well enough to fit in. Somehow Ann and her friends both embraced (or at least tolerated?) Chris' quirky humor and engineer's perspective on life. In turn, Chris patiently explained the beauty of computer science, while simultaneously finding breadth and enrichment in spending time with Ann and her friends outside the CS bubble. Both of us found (mostly) patient and gracious tolerance and support as we finished residency and two fellowships (Ann) and the PhD (Chris); many a late-night laptop party in one or the other's office, and two years of a long-distance relationship, until we finally both found jobs in the Bay Area and settled here together.

It has now, unbelievably, been nearly seven years since that fateful summer-night run. We've both grown tremendously and have been through many, many things together, and it is now hard to imagine life without each others' support and good humor. That's why, last fall, Chris carried a ring up the 2700-foot-climb Yosemite Falls hike with Ann in Yosemite National Park, and at the top of the waterfall, proposed spending the rest of our lives together. Hence the wedding – and that's where you come in! We would love for all of our friends from past and present, who are able, to join us to celebrate a shared future together. See you on November 13!
